A bookshelf that also functions as a night lamp and a storyteller. It is designed to help children between the ages of 6 and 10 feel less afraid in the dark, allowing them to fall asleep more easily.

The Proces

In the HvA Makerslab, I used laser cutters to cut our cabinet and the books from MDF sheets. The books are pressable and function as buttons to operate the device. Behind the books in the cabinet, I attached sponges so they spring back and provide the feel of a real button.

My team and I used Arduino to make our bookshelf functional. For this, we wrote C++ code to control the push buttons, rotary knob, speaker, touch sensor, and gesture sensor.

In the end, I painted everything and assembled the prototype. I paid attention to both the finishing and the functionality, ensuring that the final result is not only appealing to our target audience, but also fully functional.
