Public City Jazz
Visual Design - Motion Design
A dynamic, motion-driven website designed for smartphone, iPad, and desktop, created for the Public City Jazz Festival. Inspired by the visual identity of Gemeente Rotterdam, the design translates its bold, structured style into an engaging digital experience that brings the energy of the festival to life across every screen.
My first design stayed true to the City of Rotterdam’s corporate identity. I wanted to translate this identity into something dynamic and youthful that would appeal to the target audience. I stuck to the three core colors of the corporate identity: black, white, and green.
I also drew inspiration from modern art, specifically the Stedelijk Museum. I wanted to incorporate the dynamic aspect into the flowing and graceful lines of the City of Rotterdam logo, which would serve as accents reflecting the fluidity of jazz music.
First Ideas
In the end, I wasn't satisfied with the design because I thought the curly decoration was too subtle and the overall design came across as too businesslike and impersonal, which, in my opinion, doesn't suit a jazz festival.
More Iterations
I took a different approach and experimented with the color “Rotterdam CTA orange,” which is typically used as an accent color in the original visual identity.
For the motion design of the Public City Jazz text, I drew inspiration from the Rotterdam metro and the urban, city-driven energy it represents, translating that movement and rhythm into the animation.
I also chose to use circular images instead of rectangular ones, as round shapes felt more aligned with jazz music, musical notes, and a sense of flow and movement, rather than the static nature of rectangles.
